Deliverance Sisters - “In The End (You Will Get What You Love)”
As most of us know, our seemingly endless election season is about to end. I think most of us will agree the news (and the "news") spotlights the larger-than-life egos of the politically and well-heeled powerful, the elites and those who will stop at nothing to get to the top. This election, in particular, has a lot in the balance, so it seemed like a good time to share this song, I wrote with the wonderfully talented Phil Madeira and Lynn Nichols. Phil is singing and playing piano on this and David Madeira arranged and led the choral group which was comprised of Stephen Mason, Brian Langlinais, George Rowe, Mark Lickey and David Madeira.
Some of you may be familiar with the writer C.S. Lewis. We had this idea to create a kind of hymn written through the lens of Screwtape from C.S. Lewis' classic book The Screwtape Letters. We felt that if the character Screwtape were to write a hymn it would be an “upsidedown” hymn that used flattery to cater to the ego and not the divine. Basically, it is a garbage in-garbage out you-are-what-you-eat hymn. As the lyric says, “all the grace you will receive is the story you believed. In the end you will get what you love.”
The genesis of this song took place in 2015 as donald trump began running for office. At the time, Deliverance Sisters were creating a lot of music for the AMC episodic Western Hell On Wheels. There was a “trump-like” character in the show named Thomas Durant who was about to experience his karmic moment. We thought it would be a good idea to write a song welcoming him at the end of his life into a select club for “made-men.” In this envisioned club there would be a well-scrubbed male glee club/barbershop quartet supporting the lead singer doing the welcoming.
This song isn’t just about trump, it is also about who we are and what is important to us in this life. Time’s a wastin’. As my friend Shiela B says, “do right!!”
Rest assured the media will be already talking about the next election the day after Election Day. Meanwhile, hope you enjoy “In The End (You Will Get What You Love)” as much as we did making it.

IN THE END YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU LOVE
John Richard Clark, Phil Madeira, Lynn Nichols
There’s a banquet, my dear pilgrim
being given in your name
all your friends are gathered there to lift you up
come and taste your sweet reward
nothing less and nothing more
In the end you will get what you love
As the doors swing wide before you
you’ll forget about your cares
you’ll no longer toil beneath a scorching sun
and the things that filled your heart
will be yours to never part
in the end you will get what you love
IN THE END (In The End)
IN THE END (In The End)
YOU WILL FEAST ON MUCH MORE THAN ENOUGH
WHEN THE TABLE IS SET
YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU WILL GET
IN THE END YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU LOVE
(IN THE END YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU LOVE)
through the mist beyond the shadow
comes a voice that stirs the soul
a summons to the foolish and the just
where the light of truth burns strong
you shall know as you are known
in the end you will get what you love
IN THE END (In The End)
IN THE END (In The End)
YOU WILL FEAST ON MUCH MORE THAN ENOUGH
WHEN THE TABLE IS SET
YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU WILL GET
IN THE END YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU LOVE
(IN THE END YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU LOVE)
When your name is called up yonder
no more sorrow no more grief
just the simple truth beyond your flesh and blood
all the grace you will receive
is the story you believed
In the end you will get what you love
IN THE END (In The End)
IN THE END (In The End)
YOU WILL FEAST ON MUCH MORE THAN ENOUGH
WHEN THE TABLE IS SET
YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU WILL GET
IN THE END YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU LOVE
(IN THE END YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU LOVE)
For this version we threw all caution to the wind and performed as the auxilary Deliverance Sisters sub-entity, The Inflated Tuxedos. This is the “meat eater” version with some added horn and woodwind sauce courtesy of Jon Painter.
