HIGHWAY 79
by Rick Clark and Mark Marchetti
I was driving down the wrong side of the road on Psalm Sunday
On the radio Fats Domino was singing “Blue Monday”
I saw a church on erosion soil rich as blood
Fences looked like crosses in the Nacogdoches mud
I was drowning my sorrows in a bottle of wine
Flirting with temptation on the double yellow line
Running out of time on Highway 79
I was howlin down the highway like a wanted man
Yeah, shiftin thru the ashes of the Promised Land
I was pushing my luck when the light turned red
Thought about stopping, but drove on instead (yeah)
I was drowning my sorrows in a bottle of wine
Flirting with temptation on the double yellow line
Running out of time on Highway 79
The night was closing on the things that were said
I had to keep on driving to the water’s edge
Wash me in the blood
Wash me in the water
Lord cleanse my soul
Before the fire gets any hotter
Because there's a hound on my heels that I can't out run
Stumbling through the darkness like God's forgotten son
Running out of time on Highway 79
