“Is That All?” was inspired by a dream I had years ago. In my dream, I was returning to a house that was, evidently, where I grew up. There were signs of family life in the house, but no people. I went into a room full of framed family photos and vases of cut flowers. It dawned on me I was at my father’s funeral. In the dream, I didn’t see my father, but I heard him say, “Son, all you see will be yours one fine day.”
I felt like a ghost floating from room to room observing, rather than being a participant. The impact of the dream and my father’s words stayed with me.
Initially, I felt a deep sadness and regret for all the years I had distanced myself from my family. I also sensed years had flown by as I had chosen to be consumed by one Quixotic undertaking after another. On reflection, I believe I was seeking validation from my parents. The emptiness I felt in the dream was the sense I had shown up too late.
Is That All?
by John Richard Clark (Crack In The Sky Music - SESAC) and Mark Marchetti (Mark Marchetti Music - BMI)
I looked in the mirror
And rubbed the miles from my eyes
On the outskirts of town underneath empty skies
These wheels roll through dreams
Buried deep in the clay
To a house on the corner
Where I used to play
I got all that I wanted
Got all that I need
Is that all?
A stack of old records stand silent and still
Memories pressing against my free will
Downstairs the talk trickles up through the past
The air smells of cooking and the mowing of grass
I got all that I wanted
I got all that I need
Is that all?
Is that all that I wanted?
Is that all that I need?
Is that all?
I often wondered how I would feel
Now that I’m here
Nothing seems real
I thought of the words that my father would say
"Son all you see will be yours one fine day."
I got all that I wanted
I got all that I need
Is that all?
