For over sixty years The Isley Brothers have had an impressively consistent career spanning early R&B and funky acoustic soul to hard-as-nails socially conscious funk rock and late night sensual ballads that would give Barry White a serious run for the money.
I was thinking about how much I loved a couple of their mid-70’s T-Neck Records hits “Fight The Power, Parts 1 & 2” and “Livin’ In The Life - Go For Your Guns” and really dug the Go For Your Guns album. I was working at Peaches at the time in Memphis and this was one album we played a lot.
“Fight The Power” is the better known song and feels very applicable in these times. “Livin’ In The Life” feels better to me as a track thanks to some very punchy drums and hi-hat work and tight keyboard and guitar voicings. Then there are those Isley voices!
I’ve linked those two hits and a few other Isley Brothers gems from that era. I’m certain I’ll be getting to their great earlier tracks, but for now ….
