Artist: Buena Vista Social Club - Album: Buena Vista Social Club
If there was one musical release that did more to open up Cuba to the world in the last 25 years, it is Buena Vista Social Club’s self-titled album, which was lovingly produced by Ry Cooder. From the sensual minor key opener “Chan Chan,” through the spirited bounce of “De Camino a La Verda,” the aching “Veinte Años” to the closing waltz “La Bayamensa,” there is so much warmth, joy and musicianly camaraderie in every groove.
Not a second of contrivance can be found on this album because the members of Buena Vista Social Club had been performing this material for many decades. When Cooder’s playing or singing appears, he feels one with the band. One player who stands out for me is Rubén González, who especially shines on “Pueblo Nuevo” and the dreamy “Murmullo,” which I find especially beautiful.
If you have a sound system or car that is set-up for sadly retired DVD-Audio Surround format, look for this release. It is a fantastically natural-sounding immersive experience. Regardless, this album is a wonder and in these times, I’m hard-pressed to think when playing this wouldn’t lift your spirit.
